Trials in USSR
There were medical trials in former USSR where the method was discovered.
Very important and significant trials were conducted in Institute of Pulmonology, Leningrad in 1968 with success rates of 95% and in Sechenov's Medical Institute, Moscow in 1981 with 100% of success rates.
The Soviet Health Ministry officially endorsed the Buteyko breathing method in 1985
Asthma trial at Mater Hospital in Brisbane (Australia), 1994-1995.
The first clinical trial outside the former Soviet Union (Russia, Ukraine) was conducted at Mater Hospital in Brisbane (Australia), 1994-1995.
This study recorded the changes of symptoms, medication, quality of life in 39 asthmatics. They were split into two groups the Buteyko group and the Control group.
The Buteyko group achieved:
96% reduction of reliever medications (bronchodilators) by 3 month
49% reduction of preventive medications (steroids) by 3 month
71% reduction in symptoms and attacks
54% improvement in quality of life score after 6 weeks
The control group:
showed no significant improvement by using conventional techniques.
After 8 month the Control group undertook the Buteyko training with the same result as the initial Buteyko group.
The results of trial was published in the Medical Journal of Australia in December 1998 "Buteyko breathing technique in asthma: a blinded randomized controlled trial" MJA 1998; Volume 169: 575-578

There were a few more trials conducted in different countries that had confirmed Buteyko findings:
Australia
1995, Mater Hospital, Brisbane,
1999, Alfred Hospital, Prahan, Australia
New Zealand
2003, Gisborne Hospital, Gisborne,
United Kingdom
2003, Glasgow
